WHY WE LOVE IT

A great combination of old and new, ancient and modern, this unique guided tour allows visitors to experience the world of the religious mysteries of Ancient Greece and visit one of the most important industrial sites in the development of Modern Greece.

Activity Description

This visit to Eleusis will take you on a journey through time, exploring the most important religious ritual of antiquity, learning about its evolution through the byzantine and modern periods. In antiquity, Eleusis was the holiest spiritual site for Greeks and Romans alike. A procession started from the Parthenon, along the Sacred Way, finally reaching to Eleusis, where people could participate in the Eleusinian Mysteries, and honor Demeter and Persephone.

In modern times, Eleusis transformed from the religious to the industrial centre of Greece. During the 19th, 20th and 21st century, the city of Eleusis, was the capital of greek industry, shipbuilding, and economy. On the same route, visitors will have the opportunity to follow the steps of the procession along the Sacred Way, and learn about the development of the industrial sector in Greece, in a city that is now transforming into a cultural hub as the European Capital of Culture in 2021.
