WHY WE LOVE IT

This is a truly once in a lifetime experience and one of the most unique things to do in Athens, suitable for art lovers of all sorts (from groups to families!)

Activity Description

Discover the history of Greek jewelry over 6000 years—from prehistoric craftsmanship to modern design—in an exclusive, unforgettable experience inside Athens Benaki Museum, home to Greece’s most comprehensive collection of cultural artifacts spanning all eras of Greek society.

After a welcome from museum staff, your field expert will guide you through the Museum’s vast collection of jewelry, from ancient to Byzantine and modern times. The guide will introduce the various processes and materials that fueled Greece’s jewelry trade over the ages, as well as the customs and rituals that put jewelry at the heart of Greek culture.

In an exclusive arrangement with the museum, you are then invited to visit the museum’s underground vaults and become jewelry conservators for the day, holding in your hands a selection of precious 19th-century artifacts that are currently not on public display.

Afterwards, as a special treat for all jewelry lovers, a De Beers Diamonds International Award-winning jewelry designer will join you at the museum to explain the practice, history, and many wonders of Greek jewelry art. The celebrated designer will present the time-honored techniques and tools she uses in crafting her own artistic creations and you will have the opportunity to view her work in person.
