“I had the most amazing experience during the mosaic class with Lydia. She started off with offering so mush food and drink and all unique to Greece and Crete. We then discussed the history of mosaic and saw some work from some of the famous artists. Then the hands on marble cutting and the works...... It was a wonderful day and Lydia has such a bubbly personality. Not a second went by where I was bored or tired. She helped me through out the day but just enough for me to do most of the work myself so that I can be proud of what I created. I fully recommend this class to individuals, families or groups as it is not only fun but also very inspirational. " - Kingsley, UK
" Lydia is a very hospitable and warm instructor who introduced us to the colourful world of mosaics of which I had very limited knowledge. We joined this workshop because it was nearby and easy for the girls (ages 9 & 11) to join, it was a treat for all of us - definitely exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend it. I wish we had more time to go back for more, I would even go back solo! ” - Alison, UK
"Our workshop with Lydia was terrific. She planned our time well, was very well-prepared, and kept everyone (me, my husband, and 2 kids aged 9 and 11) engaged. We learned a lot and loved the process of making our mosaics, including cutting our own marble tesserae! It was a treat to spend time with such a lovely and talented local artisan. She even provided lots of yummy snacks. I especially love how she recommended mosaics for us to visit in Athens as well." - Jessica, USA
WHY WE LOVE IT
A rare, fun and interactive experience which will introduce you to an important Greek ancient art form, its challenges and magic!
After a brief intro and history, you will chose the ancient design you wish to reproduce. You will then select the marbles you wish to use and cut them in small tesserae, to use in your mosaic. The more adventurous can try their cutting skills with the ancient tool, the hammer and hardy. Pliers as well as ready cut tesserae will also be available. Using the tesserae you will create your mosaic following the trace of the design on the mortar until the full surface is covered and your mosaic comes alive ready for you to carry back home as a souvenir. It is displayed in a wooden frame (about 24cm x 24cm) with max weight 1,5 kg. Note: Drying for 24h is recommended, before packing the mosaic for long travel.
Designs for children are also available and the instructor is very experience with children.
The workshops take place at the hosts’ mosaic studio on the ground floor of a residential building with easy access (no stairs), surrounded by a cosy private garden, where you will take your breaks. Weather permitting, the host can also do parts of the experience in the garden. The studio is fully equipped, with bathroom/WC and kitchen while the garden is spacious for kids to play if needed!
About the host: In the last 15 years she has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Greece, UK, Italy and France. She is a member of the Hellenic Mosaic team and a BoD member of the International Association for Contemporary Mosaics (AIMC). Her work was also exhibited at the mosaic biennale at Ravenna Opere dal Mondo 2017 exhibition.
