"Great day and Costas made it better with his great knowledge of the war and local customs" - Bruce & Merilyn, New Zealand

This adventure should make it to the top of your list of things to do in Crete if you are fascinated by modern history, WWII and battlefields; it is also an alternative way to explore unique spots of the wild and magical Heraklion prefecture.

Activity Description

On the night of 26th April 1944 an abduction team led by two British officers, Major Patrick Leigh Fermor and Captain William Stanley Moss lay in ambush by the Archanes to Heraklion road, stopped Ceneral Kreipe’s car and abducted him.
Starting from Heraklion city, your expert guide will lead you to the Historical Museum of Crete (WW2 exhibition) where you will listen to information and unknown stories of The Battle of Crete (May 1941), the German occupation, the Resistance and every day life in the occupied Crete. Then, your guide will drive you to the picturesque village of Archanes, at the headquarters of German General Heinrich Kreipe, where you will be briefed on the Allied Secret Service activity. Afterwards, you will visit villa Ariadne, built by Sir Arthur Evans - the excavator of Knossos, you will listen to stories about John D.S. Pendlebury, an archeologist and spy in the British Intelligence and about the final act of the War (the German-Italian surrender signed in 1945). As you continue your journey, you will visit the Ambush Site and listen to facts and stories about the abduction plan, the place and the memorial and how locals were involved in the operation. Thereafter, you will follow the abductors' car route, will visit Mount Ida and the Ida Plateau, a very important area for the Resistance and will visit your last important spot, the historic Anogeia -a small village which was involved in the allied Secrete Service Operations- before your return back to Heraklion city.
